WE NEED DOGS & DEDICATED PEOPLE

You and your dog CAN make a huge difference in someone’s world!

You and your dog DO NOT need to be perfect – nor do you or your dog need a “degree” to qualify. Please consider exploring the possibility.

Your dog does need to be:
Friendly (with humans and other dogs)
Healthy & Legal (up to date on shots & license)
Under your control (without force or intimidation)

Please research the topic of Therapy Dogs and select the philosophy
and national organization that best matches your needs and preferences.

THERAPY DOG TEAM

REGISTRATION   PROCESS

* PLEASE REFER TO THERAPY DOGS, INC. GUIDELINES *

First meeting – WITHOUT the dog

This is an ORIENTATION to the “work” of Therapy Dogs

Meet with Tester/Observer (T/O) to:

*       Discuss the dog, programs and volunteering opportunities, etc.

*       Review and discuss visual materials, membership application, forms, test and procedures as required by Therapy Dogs, Inc. and Kindly Canines.  A liability waiver must be reviewed and signed before proceeding.  You will receive a TDInc membership application (which MUST be signed or stamped by your vet – before submitting to TDInc) and copies of TDInc’s Member Guidelines and Insurance Letter

*       Accompany T/O and his/her dog on “rounds”, observe them while on visits and determine if this activity and environment will be comfortable for you and your dog

*       Discuss any concerns or questions

*       Arrange for second meeting

Second Meeting – WITH your dog

This will include TESTING

Please bring two copies of the veterinary records showing shots and expiration dates – including the Rabies tag # and expiration date AND fecal testing within the past year.  We cannot proceed without them.

TESTING - Your dog must be tested in an unfamiliar environment AND with regular collar and 4 foot lead.  You and your dog will then accompany T/O and his/her dog on “rounds”.  Most likely, you and your dog will have the opportunity to join other teams who will also be doing “rounds”.    Active participation during this session visits may qualify as one “observation”.

*       Arrange next observation

*       Arrange Mantoux Testing schedule which can often be coordinated with further observations

*       Obtain Manor Care Volunteer packet

*       Complete the form for Criminal Background Investigation

*       Arrange for HIPAA and Elder Abuse Class Date and other required items

*       Arrange for additional observation dates – you’ll need to accompany a T/O during all visits until you receive your membership/registration through Therapy Dogs, Inc.

NOTE:  After testing, a minimum of three visit observations are required before you can submit:

*    Signed Waiver

*    Copy of the proof of Rabies vaccination or shots records which include Rabies

*    Test results

*    Report of Observations

*    Completed TDInc Membership application (must be signed/stamped by Vet)

*    Check for $25.00 membership/insurance Fee payable to Therapy Dogs, Inc.

*    Refer to application for fee schedule for additional dogs/handlers

Remember:  You’ll need to accompany a T/O during all visits until you receive your membership/registration through TDInc.

Registration with Therapy Dogs, Inc. does NOT ensure future membership with KINDLY CANINES.

**  Copies of all health/shot records (canine & human) and all background investigation results will be kept by KINDLY CANINES and distributed, as needed, to facilities where we will provide Therapy Dog volunteer services.

All handlers will be responsible for maintaining active TDInc. membership and for carrying and providing to KINDLY CANINES, copies of all updated health/shot records and active TDInc member cards.
